Horses and donkeys very frequently present skin diseases that justify a precise diagnosis and an adapted treatment.
Among the most common equine dermatoses one observes:
- Allergies to insects (culicoïdes or summer scabies), to mites, moulds or pollens (atopy) and more rarely, to food...
- Bacterial infections (staphylococcus, dermatophilus...), fungal infections (dermatophytosis or ringworm)...
- Parasitic dermatoses: lice, chorioptic mange (foot scabies), etc.
- Cutaneous tumours: equine sarcoids, carcinomas, melanomas, papillomas (warts)...
- Skin nodules: eosinophilic nodules, infectious nodules (abscesses)...
- Pigmentary anomalies: vitiligo...
- Immune diseases: pemphigus foliaceus...
The diagnosis is based, as for all skin diseases, on a detailed clinical and dermatological examination. This will enable us to choose the complementary examinations to be used:
- microscopic examinations (skin scrapings, cytology...)
- skin biopsies
- bacterial or fungal culture
- intradermal test...
Dr Beco examines horses exclusively for dermatological problems. He always asks for the collaboration of your attending veterinarian.
